Specimen No6: Plastiglomerates is a series of speculative science fiction theatre performances. In them, a group of members of the Aquatic Geochemistry International Laboratory opened the doors of their research and shared their knowledge about new plastic formations found in different parts of the world. These works aims to draw special attention to these objects as markers of the current degree of human influence on earth ecosystems.
The performance timeline begins with a guided tour where the audience can closely examine 20 specimens of different plastic formations (plastiglomerates, plasticrusts, pyroplastics, anthropochinas, etc.). Afterwards, the lab workers carry out different experiments where they reveal different characteristics of these specimens by analysing samples, including a large 2-metre one. Some of these characteristics are the elemental composition or the fluorescent qualities of certain plastics.
Plastiglomerates, plasticrusts, pyroplastics, anthropoquinas, plastistones, and plastitars are different denominations for several recently classified plastic formations. Each of them has a different creation process and composition. Their formation is a hybrid process of natural accidents and human action and they are the central node of the work that connects all elements involved.
This work invites viewers to take a close look at new and fascinating objects that are a consequence of the impact of human action on the Earth. The plastiglomerates, together with human beings, musical instruments, sounds and visuals try to awaken the poetic memory of the viewers as an inspiration to digress in the future about these minerals and awaken imagination for the unusual and unknown postnatural elements that surround us.
